Whenever I end up working in downtown LA, I always find talent attached to walls.
Date: 30.10.2103. Artist: Unknown. Location: The Arts District.
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while now, you will have no doubt seen pictures of (& heard me rant about) the legendary LA based graffiti artist ‘Risk’ …so before you go any further, this entry is not gonna be any different.
Long story short, tonight me & Kylie went down to the opening reception of Risk’s latest art show ‘Metallic Issue’ & yet again we were blown away.
Not only does Risk keep reinventing his unique (wild) style that made him a living graffiti icon, but he still manages to do it whilst keeping his feet firmly planted in the streets of LA, where he has honed his craft over the last 30 years.
With canvases fashioned from used & flattened paint cans, old license plates & even his personal studio walls (that he dramatically mounted in Victorian looking frames) Risk continually pushes the boundaries of Graffiti for us all… oh, & did I mention that he had various pieces made entirely out of neon?!
So in summary (and on a personal note) I just wanna say this.
Risk, (to me) is the godfather of graffiti. His work is a continual inspiration ….& despite the fact that I have no idea how he achieves the things that he does, I must say that whenever I see his art (whether in a gallery, or some wall in DTLA) I always end up wondering ”How the fuck did he do that with a spray can?”
So thank you for the constant mystery.
Andy & the Bombed out LA team.
PS: And thank you for making beards cool again.
